How much of my HRA is exempt from tax?
The least of the following three amounts is exempt from tax:
- HRA received from your employer
- Actual rent paid minus 10% of salary (Basic + DA)
- 50% of salary for metro cities, or 40% for non-metro cities
Example
Raghu lives in Mumbai. He receives HRA of ₹20,000/month, basic salary ₹50,000/month and pays rent ₹15,000/month.
| Head | Calculation | Amount (per month) |
|---|---|---|
| Actual HRA received | — | ₹20,000 |
| Rent − 10% of salary | 15,000 − 10% of 50,000 | ₹10,000 |
| 50% of Basic Salary | 50% of 50,000 | ₹25,000 |
Least of the three = ₹10,000/month — this is the exempt HRA. Annual exemption = ₹1,20,000.
